Participants choose from two subsections:
• Subsection A: Western Classical Music
• Subsection B: Light music/Contemporary music and/or Syncopation

Subsection A: Western Classical Music
• This subsection is for participants who receive formal, classical training in a musical instrument.
• The standard of adjudication is similar to that of institutions like UNISA, Royal School of Music, Trinity etc. It is, however, not necessary for participants to do examinations with any of these institutions in order to participate in this subsection.
• The interpretation of existing musical works is important here. Participants should provide the adjudicator with a copy of the sheet music before their performance.
• Styles in this subsection include Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic, 20th century, Contemporary etc.
• Participants in this sub section may enter their own composition in any of the styles above in Category 5. An own composition may also be used as part of the programme, provided that the standard is comparable to the other pieces performed in the programme.

Subsection B: Light music/Contemporary/Syncopation
• This section is for participants who play modern-day music, as well as those who play by ear.
• Where possible, sheet music should be provided for the adjudicator. Participants who play by ear should provide at least a melodic line and guitar chords or chord progressions for the adjudicator.
• Genres in this subsection include light music, contemporary music, or any musical piece played by ear.

Within the two subsections, participants may choose from five categories:
• Category 1: Single item (solo/1 participant)
• Category 2: Single item (group/2–4 participants)
• Category 3: Programme (solo/1 participants)
• Category 4: Programme (group/2–4 participants)
• Category 5: Own composition (solo or group)

Participants may participate in a maximum of TWO categories, one of which should be solo and one a group category. Participants may not enter two solos (Category 1 and 3) or two group categories (Category 2 and 4).

Single item (Category 1 and 2)
• In these categories, participants play one piece.
• Participants choose from the two Subsections above.
• Arrangements of existing musical works are only allowed in Subsection B: Light Music. In Subsection A: Western Classical Music, the original composition should be played.

Programme (Category 3 and 4)
• In these categories, participants play a Programme in a variety of genres within the chosen subcategory, e.g. Subsection A: Western Classical Music – Baroque, Classical and Romantic
• Arrangements of existing musical works are only allowed in Subsection B: Light Music. In Subsection A: Western Classical Music, the original composition should be played. Experienced musicians may include their own original composition in the programme. Use the free notation program MuseScore from Google to create sheet music.
• Participants are not limited to one instrument.

Own composition (Category 5)
• In this category participants perform their own composition for 1 – 4 musicians.
• The composition should be the participant’s own original work. No arrangement of existing works are allowed in this category.
• The piece should be composed in advance, i.e. no improvisation.

Instruments
• Candidate may use any instrument or combination of instruments.
• An acoustic and digital piano are available in the venue.
• Instruments should be tuned before the start of the session.

General information
• Each participant receives a certificate and adjudicator’s report after the session.
• In each age category, a winner, runner-up, 3rd place and most promising musician will be announced.
• Groups: only duets, trios and quartets are allowed.
• All candidates should provide the adjudicator with sheet music before their performance.
• DRESS CODE: Appropriate for age – Concert attire: black/white/denim. No costume changes are allowed.
• Limited dressing room facilities are available. Please arrive in costume.
• Teachers should ensure that participants play in the correct subsection and categories.
• Participants who deviate from these requirements, may be disqualified.
