ORATORS (ENGLISH)

ENTRY FEE: R100 per speech
Participants may choose from four categories:
• Category 5: Individual prepared persuasive speech (English Home Language)
• Category 6: Individual prepared persuasive speech (English Additional Language)
• Category 7: Individual unprepared persuasive speech (English Home Language)
• Category 8: Individual unprepared persuasive speech (English Additional Language)
Orators may participate in a maximum of TWO categories.
Individual prepared persuasive speech (Categories 1 and 2)
• These categories require a prepared persuasive speech.
• There are no prescribed topics. Orators are free to use ‘old’ speeches.
• The speech should be persuasive and should consist of the following:
– Introduction (with persuasive topic)
– Three arguments with supporting sources
– Conclusion
• Creative use of language is encouraged.
• The use of speaker notes (‘cards’) is recommended. Speakers may use limited props, although it will not be considered for adjudication.
• Please refer to the syllabus for time limits.
Individual unprepared persuasive speech (Categories 3 and 4)
• In these categories orators have 1 hour to prepare a speech on a given topic.
• The topic and source material will be provided. Orators then have 1 hour to write and prepare a speech.
General information
• In each age category a winner, runner-up, third place and most promising orator will be announced.
• Each participant receives a certificate and adjudicator’s feedback.
• Attire: School uniform.
• Please stay within the time limit. A bell will ring if the time limit is exceeded.
• More than one section may be hosted in the centre at any given time. Theatre etiquette is very important.
• Failure to follow the above-mentioned rules may lead to disqualification.
